Before the European settlers came to Surrey and White Rock, the Semiahmoo, Katzie and Kwantlen First Nation People were the first group to call these cities home. In 1937, as the Pattullo Bridge was opened, so was the door for expansion that made Surrey what it is today, a city with remarkable ethnic and racial diversity. As for White Rock’s local economic boom, it was due to the establishment of the present railway station in 1913 that began the lumber milling operations. As a result, the White Rock pier, a now-famous tourist attraction, was erected in 1914 as a deep-water mooring facility.
Surrey earned its moniker, “the City of Parks,” due to its vast expanse of wonderfully preserved parkland and green space, while White Rock got its name from the 486-ton granite stone boulder that chipped off from a glacier and was covered in white due to shellfish-eating birds excretions.
