Location & Boundaries

Elgin Chantrell borders Crescent Beach / Ocean Park to the west and White Rock to the south, placing it within one of South Surrey's most desirable and carefully planned pockets, with several parts of the neighbourhood backing directly onto greenbelt.

History & Naming

Elgin Chantrell's roots trace back to the 1870s, when the Semiahmoo Road (now Semiahmoo Trail) opened as the only overland route linking New Westminster to Blaine, Washington. A stage stop and hotel went up along the route, and by 1886 Elgin had been named Canada's official customs entry port, traffic along the Nicomekl River and Semiahmoo Road was required to report there, and the settlement was known locally as "Port Elgin." That prominence faded once the ports of White Rock and Douglas opened and the New Westminster Southern Railway arrived in 1891, pulling traffic away from the overland route.

The Chantrell half of the name comes from Chantrell Creek, which rises near 24 Avenue and 134 Street and flows into the Nicomekl River; sources differ on whether the creek itself was named for an early Chantrell family homestead in the area. In 1878, one of the first local community halls was built on the bank of the Nicomekl by settler William Brewer, nicknamed "Misery Hall" for the muddy dyke crossing required to reach it at low tide.

Much of what's now Elgin Heritage Park traces to land claimed by John Hardy in the late 1800s and later farmed by the Stewart family for more than fifty years; the Stewarts helped build a local school, church, and community hall, and the restored Stewart farmhouse still stands in the park today. Modern-day Elgin Chantrell is made up of several subdivided areas, including Bayview Estates, West Elgin, Bridlewood, Elgin Estates, and Peninsula Park.

Shopping & Commercial Areas

South Point Exchange and the neighbouring Shops of High Street, both on King George Boulevard, bring boutiques, restaurants, pubs, and big-box stores such as Save-On-Foods, Canadian Tire, and Home Sense, with Starbucks and other cafes along South Point Walk. Semiahmoo Mall, at the south end of the community, adds banks, shops, and restaurants.

Housing Stock

Elgin Chantrell offers a mix of classic West Coast homes, older houses, townhomes, and condominiums, with many properties backing onto neighbourhood greenbelts. Lot sizes and architectural styles vary widely across the neighbourhood's subdivided pockets, from established streets of traditional single-family houses to newer, more prestigious custom builds on larger lots, alongside townhome and condo developments that offer a lower-maintenance entry point into the area. The mix of older and newer housing gives buyers a range of options, whether they're after a move-in-ready family home, a renovation project, or new construction, all within walking or short driving distance of the neighbourhood's parks and greenbelt.

Transportation

TransLink runs peak bus service to White Rock and Willowbrook, and the 351 Crescent Beach/Bridgeport Station bus operates along King George Boulevard. By car, Highway 99 gives quick access to the US border, downtown Vancouver, Richmond, and the wider Fraser Valley.

Parks & Recreation

Crescent Park — over 128 acres of mature second-growth forest with walking trails, streams, and meadows.

Elgin Heritage Park — on the Nicomekl River, home to eagles and hawks, a 3.25 km Nature Trail Walk, and the restored Historic Stewart Farmhouse.

Sunnyside Acres Urban Forest — one of the first dedicated urban forest parks in Canada, home to birds, coyotes, and black-tailed deer, with a 4 km Nature Trail Walk popular for bird-watching and dog walking.

South Surrey Athletic Park (148th Street & 20th Avenue) — fields for soccer, rugby, football, and grass hockey, plus Softball City, a skate park, bike paths, a water park, and a running track.

Riverside Golf Centre and Nico Wynd Golf Club — local golf options.
