Location & Boundaries

White Rock is a separate incorporated city bounded by Bergstrom Road (136 Street) to the west, North Bluff Road (16 Avenue) to the north, Stayte Road (160 Street) to the east, and Semiahmoo Bay to the south. South Surrey wraps around it on three sides, with Crescent Beach and Ocean Park sharing the same peninsula to the west.

History & Naming

White Rock takes its name from a large white boulder on the beach, a glacial erratic left behind at the end of the last ice age. The Semiahmoo and other Coast Salish peoples were the area's original inhabitants, with European settlement beginning in the 1850s. Rail access through the 1910s brought early development along the waterfront, and White Rock was officially incorporated as its own city on April 15, 1957, having been part of the District of Surrey until then. The waterfront pier first opened in 1914, was rebuilt after storm damage and reopened in 1977, and was designated a heritage site by the Heritage Trust of B.C. in 1982; a public promenade along the beach was added in 1994.

Shopping & Commercial Areas

Downtown White Rock and the waterfront promenade are home to a variety of independent boutiques, cafes, and restaurants, with apartment buildings over ground-floor retail in the Town Centre area. There are no large shopping centres within White Rock itself, but Semiahmoo Shopping Centre and Windsor Square are both just north of North Bluff Road in neighbouring South Surrey, along with The Shops at Morgan Crossing a short drive away.

Housing Stock

White Rock offers a wide range of housing, from single-family homes on smaller lots to estate properties and multi-family buildings, with many homes commanding premium prices for ocean or hillside views. Waterfront and hillside streets have seen many older cottages replaced by larger custom homes over the past few decades, while the Town Centre area adds condominiums and apartment living within walking distance of the beach.

Transportation

White Rock is roughly an hour's commute to downtown Vancouver, with dedicated bus and HOV lanes making transit and carpooling practical options. Highway 99 is a short drive north, and the West Coast Express and regional bus routes connect the city to the wider Lower Mainland.

Parks & Recreation

White Rock's 8 km of sandy beach, its 2.2 km oceanfront promenade, and its heritage pier are the city's best-known features, drawing over a million visitors a year. Fifteen public parks are spread across the city, including Centennial Park, home to the Centennial Arena, curling club, community garden, and a network of ravine trails. Annual events include the White Rock Sea Festival, Canada Day by the Bay, and the Tour de White Rock cycling race.
